Great Reasons to Visit the Huon Valley and Where to Find Accommodation While You’re Here

There are few places as lovely as the Huon Valley; it’s truly a destination not to be missed by anyone who loves nature, history, and fresh, delicious food and wine. Stretching from south of Hobart to a point near the southernmost point of Australia, the Huon Valley is not just beautiful but also offers lots to see and do for curious travellers. Many people book their accommodation to use as a base in the Huon Valley, returning at night after spending their days touring the nearby attractions – others simply kick back and relax for the duration of their holiday, taking in the natural beauty and tranquillity of their surroundings. Here are some of the top reasons to book your Huon Valley, Tasmania accommodation today.

Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs

About a 90-minute drive south from Hobart lies Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, a breathtaking cave featuring a variety of natural formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, flowstone, columns, straws, and more. If you avoid caves because you hate tight spaces, don’t worry – this is a spacious cave free of narrow passages. Guided tours are available; check times before you arrive so that you’ll be sure you can book a tour and experience the cave firsthand. Visitors can also swim in the thermal pool surrounded by the beauty of the forest and the convenience of changing rooms, barbecue areas, and a visitor centre with snacks and souvenirs.

Recherche Bay

Only in the last decade has Recherche Bay been recognized as a site of national and historic significance.

It is difficult to express the sensations we felt at finding ourselves at length sheltered in this solitary harbour at the extremity of the globe” – so recorded the naturalist Jacques-Julien Labillardiere in his diary of 1792 when the “Recherche” and “Esperence” first anchored in what is now known as Recherche Bay.

The area was threatened by logging in the early 2000s, which the local community resisted with tenacity and gusto. Eventually, logging plans were abandoned and aspirations to protect this incredible place were realised. Part of the bay is now included in the National Heritage List. There are numerous walking tracks in the area, one of which leads from Cockle Creek to the Southern Ocean.

Recherche Bay is a 1 hour 15-minute drive south from the Cottage. Part of the road is gravel, but the quality of the road is good.

The Tahune Airwalk

The famous Tahune AirWalk is an elevated walkway 30 metres above the forest floor, with the final cantilever section sitting at a height of 50 metres above the Huon River, with spectacular views to the confluence of the Huon and Picton and beyond to the peaks of the World Heritage Area. It is located a little over an hour’s drive from the Cottage.

To reach the start of the AirWalk you gradually ascend 112 steps, with places to sit and rest. Basic fitness is required to complete the 619 metre-length of the AirWalk. The return journey takes about 50 minutes – more if you stop for photographs, spot birdlife or pause to enjoy the clean, fresh scents of the forest.

Fishing

Tasmania is an angler’s paradise. There are many places to bring your rod and reel and while away a morning (or an entire day). The Huon Estuary (downstream from Huonville) is perfect for bream, flathead, crayfish, Australian and Atlantic salmon, and more. The Huon River upstream from Huonville is popular for freshwater fishing, including trout and Atlantic salmon. There are plenty of good locations for jetty fishing, particularly between Huonville and Port Huon. There is a fishing shop in Franklin (a short drive from the Cottage) where you can buy whatever you need and obtain local advice on the best fishing spots.
